State Count

Delaware is one of the states that we visited separately. While he visited as child with his family, this post will be about my experience visiting Delaware in 2024.

Delaware in a Day

Delaware, often overshadowed by its larger neighbors, holds a unique place in American history as the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution in 1787. Despite its small size, Delaware boasts a rich cultural heritage and a diverse array of attractions, making it an ideal destination for a weekend getaway. In this post, I embark on a journey to Wilmington, Delaware. As we were visiting NYC for the week, I decided to wander over to my state #49 which is conveniently accessible by train from bustling New York City.

This was a quick day trip so I didn’t have time to explore Delaware thoroughly. I only had time to explore Wilmington. As a lover of coastal landscapes and culinary delights, I will be particularly eager to explore Delaware’s scenic coastlines and indulge in its famed culinary offerings, from fresh seafood to hearty comfort food in the future. If you have been to Delaware, what (and there will be a lot!) did I miss and what should be on my must do in the future?

Getting There

Embarking on my journey from Penn Station in New York City, I boarded an Amtrak train destined for Wilmington, Delaware. The ride, which took just under two hours, was a pleasant one. I found myself comfortably nestled in a spacious chair aboard a long-haul train on their route to Miami, FL. Upon reaching Wilmington, I spent a total of 3.5 hours exploring the city’s charm, which felt ample to soak in its unique vibe. The return journey, however, was a stark contrast. It was a Friday evening, and the commuter train back to NYC was brimming with passengers. Despite the crowded conditions, the trip was efficient, taking only 1.5 hours. The experience was a testament to the convenience and efficiency of train travel, and the adventure it can add to any trip.

The Wilmington Experience

With limited time to spare, I embarked on a whirlwind exploration of Wilmington’s downtown core. From the historic architecture lining the streets to the bustling activity of locals and visitors alike, there was a certain charm to be found. As I wandered through the city center, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation, eager to discover what hidden treasures awaited me in this bustling urban hub.

River Walk

Wilmington, Delaware River Walk

My first stop in Wilmington was the River Walk, a picturesque waterfront area nestled along the banks of the Christina River. The River Walk is near the train station so it was an easy walk. Originally an industrial hub, the Riverwalk has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years, emerging as a hub for dining, shopping, and entertainment.

Brewery

One highlight of my visit to the Riverwalk is a stop at the Iron Hill Brewery, located in the heart of the waterfront district. With its scenic riverfront views and handcrafted brews, Iron Hill offers the perfect opportunity to unwind and savor the flavors of Delaware.

Crab Cake Burger

In Delaware, known for its delectable seafood offerings, I couldn’t resist the temptation to indulge in a quintessential dish: the crab cake. Iron Hill Brewery offered just the opportunity. Opting for the crab cake burger accompanied by a side of sweet potato fries, I eagerly awaited the arrival of my meal while sipping on a 4 beer tasting flight. After finishing, I was amazed at how a basic meal could be so fulfilling. It was truly delightful, capturing the very essence of Delaware’s coastal cuisine, all within the setting of a brewery!

Immersing in Art and Culture

Stepping into the Delaware Contemporary, a compact art studio-like museum nestled in Wilmington’s Riverfront, I encountered a concise yet well-curated collection of contemporary artwork. Despite its modest size, the museum showcased thoughtfully arranged exhibits that offered a brief but insightful glimpse into the local art scene.

While the exhibits were brief, they provided a diverse range of styles and mediums. My visit to the Delaware Contemporary was relatively short-lived and I am not sure if the $12 was well spent. However, I left with a sense of appreciation for the museum’s efforts to promote local artists and foster creativity within the community. While it may not have been a standout stop on my itinerary, it nevertheless offered a brief yet enriching cultural experience in the heart of Wilmington.

Conclusion

Delaware’s allure extends far beyond its modest borders, inviting visitors to discover its rich history, scenic beauty, and vibrant cultural scene. Whether you’re exploring the historic streets of Wilmington or lounging on the sandy shores of Rehoboth Beach, the first state offers a treasure trove of experiences waiting to be uncovered. In the future, I am hoping to explore further but for crossing off state #49, this visit was lovely.
